Last September I took a drive down Happy Valley Road on one of those lingering days of summer when the sunlight and shadows, hot air and cold spots are about equal. I liked the gentle curve of the road and the shadows draping over it, with the car ready to roll through. All those poles were a bit daunting from a painter’s perspective, so I just didn’t put them in until necessary. After all, they are just lines 🙂 It’s a good effect: the eye follows the poles in from the right, around the left and out the right again on the road. I was really happy with this painting in the show because it is in a spot that brings out the warm light (much better than this photo does).
Can you smell the asphalt?
