We put up the tree yesterday. It’s probably the latest we’ve ever done it, but it was still a whole week before Christmas. The tree had to have lots of lights, ornaments and garland. The best ornaments are the ones that were gifts – especially the hand made ones. We’ve got the caroling mice, the teazel family, crocheted swans and bells, Great Grandma’s bead work. Some things have lasted better than others. Googly eyes tend to fall off, always one at a time. Play dough crumbles. Each year there seems to be a new armless snowman. But we still have a mangled paper candy cane from kindergarten, beaded wreaths and Styrofoam balls rolled in glue and sparkles.
Some people have a new theme and a new colour code every year, but we always have basically the same tree. We don’t decorate it, we just hang up our memories.
